Introductory Welcome

The AS Music course consists out of two components; it is designed to take one year to complete and is examined only in June each year. A further six months is required to complete the full AL Music (Components 3, 4 and 5) once the AS Music examination has been completed. AL Music is only examined in November each year. Please take note that this distance study programme is focused only on AS Music. For more information on AL Music please visit the CIE website (www.cie.org) or refer to the CIE’s A Level Music syllabus included in this work programme.

Regular contact with the Tutor in the form of assignments (Component 1) and regular performance and composition submission dates (Components 2) need to be strictly adhered to. This is to the advantage of the candidate in order for continuous assessment and consolidation of performance and creative work especially, to be done on a regular basis, thereby ensuring continuous guidance. Tutorials will tentatively be held at 79, 9th Street, Linden in May 2012(TBC). These tutorials will include examination preparation, performance and composition pointers as well syllabus discussion. All work (Scores, CDs, etc.) needs to be brought along, including past examination papers.

The AS Music course consists of two Components. Component 1 deals with the musicological, historical and philosophical elements in the prescribed music works relating to socio-economic influence, characteristic compositional principles and how the various composers altered them, as well as the more subjective references that are relevant in Section B.

Component 2 needs two expressive options: a performance element and a composition element that will help the candidates to showcase their musical talents in both these areas. Please refer to your syllabus in your past paper pack. This AS Music course utilizes only elements 1 and 4 of Component 2.
